Whenever I host friends, I love making hummus. One can of chickpeas and a little bit of time in the kitchen is enough to yield enough product for at LEAST six hungry people. It can be served in charcuterie board form, or it can be the star of the show with a simple side of pita chips. This hummus recipe can easily be made vegan/vegetarian just by omitting the ground beef, but I find that adding the meat makes it much more flavorful and filling.
I’m used to having cold hummus straight out of the fridge, but this warm and toasty dish is delicious, especially when served right off of a sizzling pan.
My favorite part of making hummus is plating it. I love dressing it up with various fresh herbs and bright spices like paprika, chili powder, or chili flakes. Or sometimes all three…
A generous drizzle of olive oil right before serving really gives this bowl the finishing touch it needs!
If you’re planning on entertaining a large crowd, I suggest serving this with fresh carrots, celery, pita chips, cucumbers, broccoli, snap peas, fresh pita bread, and even falafel if you have some on hand!
Warm Hummus & Pan Fried Ground Beef
Equipment
- Non-stick pan
- Mixing spoon or silicone spatula
- Food processor or blender
Ingredients
Hummus Ingredients
- 1 can Chickpeas
- 1/2 cup Tahini
- 1 Juicy lemon
- 2-3 cloves Garlic
- 6-7 tbsp Olive oil
- 1 tsp Chili powder
- 1 tsp Cumin
- Salt & pepper
Ground Beef Ingredients
- 1 lb Ground beef
- 1/2 White onion
- 2-3 cloves Garlic
- 1 bunch Cilantro
- Olive oil
- 1 tsp Chili powder
- 1 tsp Cumin
- Salt & pepper
Instructions
Hummus Instructions
- Drain canned chickpeas, rinse them under cold water, and place them in a bowl.
- Cover the chickpeas with boiling water and let them sit in it for 5-7 mins (this will make the hummus creamier).
- Drain the chickpeas again and add them to a food processor or blender along with the tahini, lemon juice, peeled garlic cloves, olive oil, and spices.
- Blend until a creamy consistency forms. Taste it and adjust the seasoning as needed. (If the hummus is not creamy, add more lemon juice, olive oil, or a bit of water and blend until it reaches the consistency you prefer).
Ground Beef Instructions
- Finely chop the white onion and mince the garlic cloves.
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick pan on the stove to a medium heat.
- Once heated, add chopped onion and minced garlic. Pan fry until golden brown (about 2-3 mins).
- Using a spatula, move the onion and garlic mixture to the side of the pan and add ground beef on the empty side.
- Season the beef directly on the pan using the listed spices. Stir and crumble it into small pieces until it is browned. (This will take about 10 minutes).
- When the beef is fully cooked, taste it and adjust the seasonings as needed.
- Chop the small bunch of cilantro and mix it into the onion, garlic, and beef mixture when the beef is finished cooking.
Plating Instructions
- Smooth hummus into a bowl using a spoon, and leave a large indent in the middle to make room for the ground beef. Fill the "hole" with the ground beef mixture.
- Add chili powder, a drizzle or olive oil, and fresh cilantro to garnish.
